Having taught quite a bit at the university, having interviewed quite a few junior developers... I have to agree what's proposed here is missing from most curricula. I wish this would be taught more systematically. If not at least students everywhere should know this online course exists.

Indeed, this is going to be "interesting" in educational situations... I guess that'll at least push into richer assignments.

Obviously I'm convinced it's necessary for students to learn how to contribute as soon as possible. That being said, this leave unanswered the very important question of not burning out project maintainers. Indeed, it needs to be structured in some way, most projects can't cope up with swarm of students dropping potential contributions on them.
