It will fluctuate with time so it needs to be kept in check. Indeed, some things are commodities so can be decided upfront, but the rest of the functional envelope will change over time. Also make sure you drive the project by risks to have early feedback where it matters most.
Very good primer on a widespread and very hard to avoid bias. This is why it's hard for projects to properly meet deadlines.

This is a good piece. Killing all planning is indeed not a good thing. Setting plans in stone wasn't a good thing either, it's no reason to go to the other extreme.
