Aren't the signs clear enough yet? Don't get misled by Bluesky.
A good reminder of why this is the protocols which matter. People got too accustomed to centralised platforms.
This is a good point, unlike what some claims the Internet isn't dying. The commercial crap on top is thinning out and is getting filled with crap indeed. Still, what made the Internet and the Web are still here for people to use.
Indeed, it's just can't be called decentralized...
Friendly reminder following the Cloudflare downtime earlier this week.
Nice and clear indicators of how decentralized the fediverse and the "atmosphere" really are.
Nice experiment. When looking at the actual infrastructure used, the servers are indeed nicely decentralized. For the users the picture would be different though.
The debate about how BlueSky and decentralisation or federation continues. It's nice to see how civilized the people involved are. This is how we can make progress.
Definitely this. Sure we should seek for decentralization, but this is not going to happen or be effective without regulation. Ensuring privacy is a legislative and political problem as much as a technical one.
A long and comprehensive analysis of Bluesky. Also brings interesting critiques about both Bluesky and the Fediverse. Clearly Bluesky as of today is not effectively decentralized and shouldn't be considered as such.
Interesting explanation of the different visions and governance behind ActivityPub and ATProto.
This is very very centralized. No good surprise here unfortunately... and still email is really tough to fully self-host.
Looks like a very interesting approach. This is still clearly for techies though, but time will tell.
