Interesting ideas for a proper RSS renaissance.
This is really going down the drain. Right wings extremists basically took over the content moderation vacuum. I wonder how long before this turns into simply into an extremist echo chamber with no real user on it.
This sudden rise of the Fediverse is indeed a chance. Let's hope it's not wasted. Good list of things to pay attention to in this article.
There are indeed a few architectural problems with the Fediverse as it is. Can this be solved? Hopefully yes.
Interesting point of view, also lays out nicely how social networks degenerated into social media. I appreciate this kind of perspective.
Success is a two sided coin. Clearly this mass exodus of Twitter users will overwhelm existing Mastodon users and a few instance administrators. It's understandable that is can be perceived as some kind of assault from people not used to the customs. How will the preexisting culture hold? The Pandora box is now opened we shall see.
Good thinking about the recent Mastodon users increase. Highlights fairly well why it's desirable, why it's a better social media platform but also the challenges ahead... including resources consumption.
The most addictive and also tracking you everywhere it can (unsurprisingly). Toxicity at its highest.
Interesting point of view... indeed, let's see what rises from the ashes.
Let's get the historical records straight indeed. Don't believe the web3 bullshit revisionism.
Interesting (although unsurprising) study (I advise looking at the actual paper) about the links between social media and well being. Of course it has a couple of weaknesses, we need more such studies to grow the numbers and reduce the biases.
I like the noise metaphor it briefly mentions. It's indeed similar, you're within constant noise, you don't notice it anymore but still when it stops you feel relieved. The benefits listed are indeed to be expected.
Since I'm still hoping for a strong RSS revival (not that it disappeared but I wish it was more the default option again), this post especially resonated with me. The discovery tool sounds very interesting.
That's a good list and a good way to approach social media.
Alright, interesting result... puts a nail in the coffin of social media being a positive force in the world ever. At that point it's not only about the toxic architecture of the ones running from ads... it's more fundamental than that. It'd definitely need to be completely rethought.
It is indeed important that serious research and conversation arise on this topic. The bomb is ticking.
A good illustration on why social media are toxic for our thinking. They push us to focus on anecdotes and as such miss the big picture. No wonder everything got so polarized so quickly there.
I'm on that social media for work reason, still oh boy... how much I hate it. This article pretty much summarizes why.
Not very scientific but gives a rough idea of which services are heavy or not in the fediverse. Matrix seems to be still dismal in that regard... I wonder if we'll see a revival of XMPP, that'd be very funny.
Once again this highlight the toxic architecture of those social networks. They create frustration and anger and it's by design. The trending topics on Twitter is one of the worst form of audience clashes.
